The Higher Education Review (HER) for Alternative Providers was undertaken by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) at the School of Economics and Law in February 2017. Providers are subject to educational oversight by the QAA under the UK Visas and Immigration's (UKVI) Tier 4 sponsorship requirements. The review lasted 4 days and comprised of two reviewers, Ms Alexa Christou and Professor Graham Romp. The review manager for the HER process was Ms Roshani Swift.

Having entered the HER cycle in July 2016, the review team made the following judgements about standards and quality:
  • The maintenance of the academic standards of awards offered on behalf of degree-awarding bodies and/or other awarding organisations meets UK expectations.
  • The quality of student learning opportunities meets UK expectations.
  • The quality of the information about learning opportunities meets UK expectations.
  • The enhancement of student learning opportunities meets UK expectations.

The QAA review team identified a feature of good practice, stating that the School had designed “programmes in law and management with an explicit focus on social responsibility that articulates well with the School's mission and philosophy”.

Higher Education Review for alternative providers involves a full QAA review every four years, as well as an annual return and short monitoring visits between the quadrennial reviews. The School previously went through the Review for Educational Oversight (REO) process as London College of Business Management and Information Technology (LCBMIT) in February 2012 with good standing and followed up with brilliant monitoring visits in 2013 and 2014, achieving an outcome of “commendable”.

SOEL has undergone a review for educational oversight by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) and has received its final report, which is available in full at: http://www.qaa.ac.uk/reviews-and-reports/provider?UKPRN=10025187. The report was published in May 2017.
